Ernest Nister (1842-1909) specialized in coloured toy and movable picture books. He used a wide range of movable techniques to intrigue children. The popular late nineteenth-century format of changing pictures capitalizes on a child's fascination with peek-a-boo. Nister animated his pages with simple slats, dimensional scenes, and pinwheel mechanics. With these basic paper tools, he created fantastic transformations of dissolving pictures, based on the venetian blind principle. "The illustrations in these books had a picture divided into two, four or five equal sections by corresponding horizontal or vertical slits. When a tab at the side or bottom of the illustration was pulled, the picture 'transformed' into another picture"......... £80.00

Comic Cuts was a British comic . It was created by the reporter Alfred Harmsworth through his company Amalgamated Press . It was published from 1890 to 1953, lasting 3006 issues, and in its early days inspired other publishers to produce rival comics. Its first issue was an assortment of reprints from American publications. During its lifetime, the comic merged with many others including Golden Penny (1928), Jolly Comic (1939) and Larks (1940). Comic Cuts finally disappeared in September 1953 when it was merged with Knockout. Comic Cuts held the record for the most issues of a British weekly comic for 46 years, until The Dandy overtook it in 1999. Rare copies..... £60.00

While under contract to MGM he was one of the screenwriters for The Wizard of Oz. He was chosen for the job on the basis of his children's story, The Tale of the Land of Green Ginger — a children's classic which has seldom been out of print since it was first published in 1937. However, his finished script for The Wizard of Oz was somewhat revised by Florence Ryerson and Edgar Allan Woolf, revisions that Langley himself strongly objected to, but which appear in the finished film. Langley is on record as saying that he hated the completed product, an opinion not borne out by the general critical and public consensus. The Wizard of Oz has become one of the best-loved films ever made....

The result was The House that Jack Built & The History of John Gilpin.

Liberty's of London adapted Kate Greenaway's drawings as designs for actual children's clothes. A full generation of mothers in the liberal-minded "artistic" British circles who called themselves "The Souls" and embraced the Arts and Crafts movement dressed their daughters in Kate Greenaway pantaloons and bonnets in the 1880s and '90s. Ernest Nister's company produced many children's books of superior quality in both illustration and printing. Out of these, Nister's productions included a number of innovative movables. In addition to being marketed in Germany, the pictures were also produced especially for an English audience from Nister's London headquarters.

The thaumatrope is a toy that was popular in Victorian times. A disk or card with a picture on each side is attached to two pieces of string. When the strings are twirled quickly between the fingers the two pictures appear to combine into a single image due to persistence of vision.

John Redington had been Green's agent for many years and after the latter's death in 1860 Redington acquired the bulk of Green's plates. He eventually sold his entire stock to Benjamin Pollock in the 1870s.

A hole was put in the handle so a leather thong could be tied to it and the child could carry it on his/her belt or around his/her neck.

Half title + Title + pp. (2) introduction + pp. (1) contents + pp. (4) adverts + 8 of 12 Vivid chromolithographic maps, loose, (perished gutta-percha), depicting in human form various peculiar distortions of the political geography of mid-nineteenth century Europe, slight foxing. Original gilt-decorated cloth, damaged. The maps and rhymes were designed to amuse children and help them memorise the outline of European countries.

Originally selling for "A Penny Plain & Tuppence Coloured". JK Green claims to be the person who invented Juvenile Theatrical Prints in 1808. John Redington had been Green's agent for many years and after the latter's death in 1860 Redington acquired the bulk of Green's plates. He eventually sold his entire stock to Benjamin Pollock in the 1870s.
