The maps, which are somewhat crowded, shows towns, villages, churches, hills
(depicted pictorially), castles, parks, trees (to depict woods or forests),
rivers, and bridges. The towers and spires of the churches indicate the relative
importance of the towns or villages. It is not considered that the maps were
drawn by Saxton personally but rather that the details were copied from Saxton's
map. Oblong 4to.

37 maps, Yorkshire map omitted. Leicestershire and Rutland are on one map.
These tiny maps, doubtless copied from the playing-card of 1590
and now known as the "Thumb-nail" maps, engraved in the bottom right-hand
corner of a plate measuring 4 X 4 ins. They show a few towns or castles (which
are indicated by the initial letters in capitals) and rivers. Lines, showing
the points of the compass, radiate from the map below the map, an open pair
of dividers measures off the scale of 10 miles. Outside the border. The major
portion of the plates is devoted to a triangular table of distances, prepared
in the manner invented by John Norden. The title is in the square formed by
the lines of the table, in the top left-hand corner of the plate. Along the
top is a list of towns the border is formed by a single line.
The name and address of Mathew Simons, in the title of the work, appears to
replace an earlier one. The maps were reprinted in 1636 and possibly later.

map in an inclined position has been squeezed into the triangular space below
the distance table. It now shows rivers, towns (with the names spelt in full)
and some hills. A pair of dividers measures off the new scale of 10 miles (=
7 /16ins.).
The larger map was reprinted in 1657, 1662, 1668 and 1677, and in addition,
at various times in the "Direction", etc., with the title-page still
dated 1643, by Jenner, and without date, by J. Garrett, who succeeded Jenner

This work is better
known by its later name, the " Quartermaster's Map," and was
a close copy, cartographically, of Saxton's general map of England and
Wales of 1583, and shows rivers, bridges, lakes, towns and principal villages. On the left, the title and scale in an ornamental cartouche. A single line forms
the border. Jenner reprinted the maps in 1671, by Garrett in 1676 and 1687,
and by J. Rocque in 1752.
J. Rocque, when publishing the reprint in 1752, stated that the map was originally
produced at the orders of Oliver Cromwell, for the use of the Parliamentary
Army. Sir H. G. Fordham, however, considered it was produced simply as a commercial
venture of Thomas Jenner to meet an emergency demand, as he failed to find any
foundation for Rocque's statement.

The engraved plates
for a number of counties were undoubtedly prepared for an edition in 1665. If
they were not actually published, that might be easily explained by the confusion
and mortality caused by the Plague in that year. A suggestion that the stock
of newly printed maps was destroyed in the Great Fire in the following year
is equally reasonable as an explanation of the non-existence of any copies.
Lea's atlas of 1665, Whitaker was able to construct a state of 19 maps.

A small sketchy map occupying the lower centre of a plate 4 1/4 x 7 ins. The upper part of the plate has, within an ornamental design:- It shows towns, villages, hundreds (numbered), hills, meres, rivers, bridges and main-roads. Asterisks indicate that returns members to Parliment. Top left, the scale arranged vertically; left centre, the title in an ornamental panel. Bottom right, a list of the hundreds in a plain panel. The border is formed by a belt of ornamentation between two fine lines.
Below the map but within the border, is a panel of statistical information regarding the county. This work, essentially a road-book, is made up mainly of strip-maps reduced (to a scale of 2 miles to 1in) from John Ogilby’s Survey of 1675, and printed on both sides of the paper. There are therefore strip-maps. It became very popular and was reprinted in 1720, (4 variants?), 1722?, 1723, 1724, 1730, 1731, 1734, 1736, 1749, 1751, 1753, 1759, 1764 and possibly other dates as well.
The work was hastily published and many corrections had to be made to later issues.
Plate 128 was numbered 121, corrected in the 2nd variant 1720 issue, along with plate number 121 top left, has been erased and re-engraved top right. The plate number top right of plate 124 has been erased and re-engraved top left, corrected in the 3rd variant 1720 issue.

They are palpably copies of the second edition of Morden’s series of 1676 (No. 131). which, however, show that the dimensions and scales are the same as in Morden’s series. Place names in the new series are in rather larger letters, but the most easily identifiable feature is that “ Bredth “ is now spelt Breadth “ in the statistical compartment at the bottom of the card.
Jolin Lenthall was in business at the above address at this time, 1724. He was previously in partnership with W. Warter, who in his turn had been in business alone, all at the same address.

The county maps with a topographical description were published alphabetically in weekly parts, 1743-46. Only 29 county maps in three volumes have been located, up to the county of Shropshire. The fourth volume does not appear to have been traced. Volume four must have at some time been published because John Rocque was able to acquire the complete set of 52 plates in about 1750, updating the maps with an altered scale bar. In (THE LARGE ENGLISH ATLAS BY E. BOWEN AND T. KITCHIN. PUBLISHED BY JOHN HINTON, 1750—52). Large folio.
The famous maps, the largest of the counties to date and incorporating many new details, but also introducing some curious errors. The degrees of longitude (West of London) are about 2 degrees out and the main body of the counties are too wide from east to wast. They show towns with their market days, villages (with indications to show whether rectory or vicarage), religious houses, charity schools, castles, hundreds, hills, parks, forests, sands, meres, rivers, brooks, post roads with measured distances between the towns, and several other roads now shown for the first time. Numerous descriptive notes are scattered around the map. A circular compass indicator. The title with the imprint below, scale, “Explanation” (of the symbols on the map), and the dedication. The titles have a pictorial surround, The border is formed by a thick line with a double inner line marked off into degrees and minutes of latitude and longitude. The backs are plain. These county maps were first published at various dates from 1749 and the issue was probably not quite completed until nearly 1760. Therefore earlier bound collections are incomplete and also, lack the title-page. The one being published by Hinton, could not have been later than 1752. It was reprinted in 1753, 1760, 1763, 1765, 1767, 1777, 1780, 1781, 1785, 1787 and sometime after 1794.
